Akel is due to join the German registered ship, the R/V Sonne, on the 25th January 2010 in Auckland New Zealand for mobilisation prior to a survey over the Lau Basin near Fiji.
The survey will encompass ROV and side scan sonar, phase bathymetry and multibeam bathymetry data. Akel will be operating as a geophysicist for this survey and will be involved with the acquisition and processing of the side scan sonar and phase bathymetry data.
The instrument used will be the DSL120 owned and operated by the Hawaii Mapping Research Group of the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and has in turn been contracted by a Korean academic institution.
